La Noire De - Ousmane Sembène
Black Girl by Ousmane Sembène is a critique of neo-colonialism that illustrates how the impact of colonial oppression persist in post-independence relationships, as portrayed by Diouana's exploitation and cultural alienation; through her personal journey, Sembène exposes the psychological and societal effects of continued discrimination on individual identity, revealing the illusion of freedom in a decolonized world.
I enjoyed curating this presentation for the purpose of understanding the complexities in postcolonialism as I navigate the world in the 21st century as a young Black woman. Understanding the historical contexts of Sembène, an artist influenced by his sociopolitical environment is extremely powerful in understanding his influences by the Soviets and Marxist idealogies.
